Noëlle balances wit and pathos, legalism and relationship, guilt and grace in such a way that will ring true in both your heart and your head this yuletide season. The film will amuse and enchant, reminding us that miracles, in this season more than most, really do exist, and that the true meaning of the Christmas is close at hand when we embrace the gift of grace that is a child.

“Powerful enough to turn a grinch into someone appreciating the joys of the season.”
It's powerful enough to turn a grinch into someone appreciating the joys of the season.
David Wall, probably not a familiar face to many, writes and directs this heartfelt Christmas yarn set in a tiny Cape Cod hamlet.
Wall also stars as a hit man, of sorts, for the Catholic Church. He doesn't like what he calls "the people side of religion," but he's very good at shutting down churches dying on the vine.
The first time we see Father Jonathan Keene (Wall), he's alone on a bus headed into town. Actually, he's not entirely alone. A little girl, a figment of both his imagination and a troubled relationship past, shows up from time to time.
Even though "Noëlle" uses Catholicism as its dramatic arena, the tender story of love, forgiveness and peace on earth is broad enough to touch the heart of a grizzled film critic raised Southern Baptist.
In addition to Wall, who deserves kudos under all three of the hats he juggles, Kerry Brennan is quite good as Marjorie, the kind of special-yet-troubled woman who can draw confessions from a priest.
"Noëlle" gets by on a pauper's budget by Hollywood standards. And you won't know many, if any, of the people in the cast.
Its message, however, is one we've heard before this time of year: It's a wonderful life.

“A touching message. Profound."”
Today I went to the show and saw a movie that will probably go unnoticed by many. It's entitled Noelle. I occasionally shed a tear at the theater, but I don't usually blubber uncontrollably like I did at this one. It's a low budget, hardly publicized movie, with a touching message... Those who act in it are unrecognizable as famous stars. However, there are three words spoken at the end of the movie that are very profound and life changing. I would highly recommend it, and my prayer is it does become a classic.
...
The movie Noelle is a story of two priests, who both have problems, failures, secrets, and questions about their lives. It's a story of people who carry guilt and shame. It also has in it the meaning of Christmas, and that is a gift. The gift is one of a new beginning.
If you could have one gift what would it be? Would it be that cool new phone, that big screen TV, that I-Pod, or other neat gadget you've wanted all year long? If someone had a gift of a new beginning, would you take it in its place?
This holiday, remember the reason for the season and ponder the three little words spoken at the end of this movie as your gift to take. "All is forgiven."

“A visually striking and brisk holiday film, one that manages to be sweet and yet light on the sugar at the same time.”
We've come to expect the pious, the warm and the sentimental from the recent run of films aimed at the Christian moviegoer. But that has typically made for pretty bland cinema. "Noelle," a new film opening in select cities today, is the first movie in this genre to add wit to the recipe. It's clever, well-acted and almost-but-not-quite edgy....
....(David) Wall, who seriously plays up his resemblance to a young Robert Redford, has filmed a visually striking and brisk holiday film, one that manages to be sweet and yet light on the sugar at the same time.

“A warm, true-to-life and moving drama with characters you truly care about.”
Writer/director David Wall does a great job of combining strong character development and some dry humor along with poignant, heartfelt scenes which never feel too melodramatic or cheesy... By creating such a human drama, David Wall allows the surprises come from the characters rather than from the plot, so they don¹t seem contrived. After mean-spirited movies this season that center around Christmas ... or dreary, unimaginative ones ...
it¹s a breath of fresh air to discover Noëlle as a warm, true-to-life and moving drama with characters you truly care about.

Obviously a labor of love for all parties involved, "Noelle" is an engagingly low-key, Christian-skewing indie...
...Throughout the pic, [writer-director] David Wall maintains a lightness of touch and a generosity of spirit, avoiding overt preachiness even while characters engage in animated discussions about faith, religion, guilt and expiation. Some Catholics may object to Marjorie's unchallenged description of an orphanage "run by nuns who never wanted to be mothers in the first place," and to the cliched plot device of a priest (actually, in this case, two priests) tempted to renounce vows and savor romantic love. (On the other hand, other auds may be riled by Keene's professed desire to win Protestants over "to the one, true church.") But pic's strong pro-life stance should be enough to placate even those who might criticize "Noelle" on religious grounds.
Lead and supporting roles are capably played by largely unknown thesps who are all the more effective for their unfamiliarity. (Daffyd Rees makes the most of his scene as a wise and dry-witted barkeep.)
Beecher Cotton's moody lensing of Cape Cod winterscapes and Andrew Ingkavet's delicate musical score are the film's standout production values.
